Loneliness and belonging: how to feel less alone

Loneliness is not just being alone. It is the gap between the connection you have and the connection you need. It is common, and it is something we can work on together.

If you or someone else may be in danger

US: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or chat at 988lifeline.org. Sierra Leone: the Ministry of Health mental health line is toll-free on 5116. Anywhere else: findahelpline.com lists free, confidential lines by country. In immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

Why loneliness matters

The WHO Commission on Social Connection and the US Surgeon General have both described loneliness as a public health concern, linked to poorer mental and physical health.

AI companions and the always-on feed

Chatbots and AI companions can feel comforting, especially late at night. Some people find them helpful as a bridge. But they cannot replace the mutual care of real relationships. Notice whether a tool leaves you more connected to people, or less.

Small steps toward connection

  • Send one message to someone you have lost touch with.
  • Return to a shared space: a faith community, sports group, class, or volunteer role.
  • Say yes to one small invitation this week.
  • Be the one who invites: many others feel the same.

Belonging for migrants and the diaspora

Moving countries can mean losing language, food, and familiar faces all at once. Community associations, churches, mosques, and cultural groups can be lifelines. It is okay to grieve what you left behind.

Join a peer circle

Ibraluks peer support circles are small, guided conversations about living well with change. They are not therapy, and they are a place to be heard.

Common questions

Is it normal to feel lonely even around people?
Yes. Loneliness is about the quality of connection, not just the number of people around you.
Can an AI chatbot cure loneliness?
No tool can replace human relationships. Some people use AI as a bridge, but it works best alongside, not instead of, real connection.
