Mental health resources in Liberia

Care without borders

Liberia has built a public mental health workforce since the civil wars and the Ebola outbreak, but services are still stretched. Here are the public resources we could verify.

If you or someone else may be in danger

US: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or chat at 988lifeline.org. Sierra Leone: the Ministry of Health mental health line is toll-free on 5116. Anywhere else: findahelpline.com lists free, confidential lines by country. In immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

E.S. Grant Mental Health Hospital, Monrovia

Part of JFK Medical Center, E.S. Grant is described as Liberia's only tertiary mental health hospital, offering inpatient and outpatient care, including for substance use. JFK Medical Center lists 21st Street, Sinkor, Monrovia, with 24-hour contact numbers on its psychiatry page.

Mental health clinicians in the counties

Since 2010 the Carter Center has worked with the Ministry of Health to train more than 360 mental health clinicians. Ask at your county hospital or health centre whether a mental health clinician is available.

Being honest about the gaps

Liberia still has very few psychiatrists, and medicines and transport can be hard to get. We could not verify a national, always-staffed mental health hotline, so we do not list one. For current lines, check findahelpline.com, and in an emergency call your local emergency number or go to the nearest hospital.

Trauma, stigma and community

Many Liberians carry memories of war and Ebola. Talking about it is a sign of strength, not weakness. See our guide to loneliness and belonging for ways to rebuild connection, and remember that faith, family, and community support can go hand in hand with professional care.

For the diaspora

Supporting family in Liberia from abroad can be heavy. Our caregiver burnout guide covers looking after yourself while you help.
